The boring part!
Route 66 opened on November 11th, 1926, it ran from The Buckingham Fountain in Chicago, to Los Angeles until 1936. Giving it a total length then of 2,448 miles. (3940 km)
The end point then moved from Los Angeles, for whatever reason to Santa Monica, until June 27, 1985, where the US decided the route was no longer relevant and it was replaced by the Interstate Highway System.
Route 66 never actually run to the sea, which a lot of people are led to believe, it actually ended, on the intersection of what is today Ocean Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard, or in old money US-101.
Other names for Route 66 are:
1. The Great Diagonal Way - because a large section of it goes diagonally across America. (Obvious)
2. The Main Street of America. (Obvious)
3. The Mother Road. (Obvious)
4. The Will Rogers Highway - Who's Will Rogers! (Not so obvious)

That's all very well Tracy, I can see Ross's point, why'd he get a road named after him?, Not any road mind but, road, Route 66. - He must have cracked some funny jokes to win that title!
