  • Borobudur is a 9th century Buddhist. it is designed with nine platforms – with three circular platforms at the top, with the rest being square. It has 2,672 decorative panels and 504 Buddha, the majority with there heads missing, enabling you to act like a twat, (see the next photo!). The mother dome is located in the middle of the top platform with 72 stupas surround it, each with a Buddha inside.

Borobudur was left abandoned after the decline of the Buddhist and Hind religions in Java around the 14th century, when the Javanese converted to Islam.

Sir Thomas Raffles then re-discovered in 1814 , when he was the then British ruler of Java. Where it has since undergone many restorations. The biggest project was between 1975 -1982 by UNESCO and the Indonesian government
Since 1991, Borobudur has been listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. And is still used for pilgrimage as well as a major attraction for tourism in Indonesia, who as it seems the Indonesians tourists are more interested in practicing their English with Westerners than actually looking around the boy.

The art of haggling also takes on a new meaning here, one lady wanted £1 for a bottle of water, 6 times the over the normal inflated western price! - simply got tired and gave her what I was paying everywhere else, after the initial shrug of the shoulders and a stare that would kill your dog see then didn't argue, honestly, it wears you down!
